The central nervous system of HERESY is the family -- primary education,
instilled values, support and lack thereof, mores. On the periphery
other relationships -- church, school, government, friends. Always human
sexuality, pulsing above, on, and underneath the surface. In HERESY
things are not weighted. Evil and good belong to the spectator. The
dark and shadowy side depends from where you are casting your light.
HERESY is a movement-oriented-musical. About making fun of societal
taboos, religion and sex and gender issues, war and materialism, self-abusive
therapy, and science --"the linguistics of snot/ First it is the
truth, and then it's snot./ The problem most problematic/ The probability
of static.../Seems like phlegm-atic attitudes/ But it's snot"
dk wrote his largest, most inclusive work as a musical for two main
reasons: 1) he was raised on musicals and the form is very accessible,
and 2) Musicals themselves are truly in the American grain. Like westerns.
The challenge in writing the screenplay is in retaining the integrity
of the musical. To keep the air light and fluid while surgically examining
the depths of the American fabric.
There's a linear familiar story which occurs in episodes. As the show
begins, the father (PaP) cloaked all in black goes off to work, to war,
to whatever. Mother takes charge, loves her son, dislikes her daughter,
and colludes with the son (QueueX) to drug his sister (Rozee) so he
can have "his way with her. And I mine..." The daughter resists,
but both in dance and metaphor is taken anyway. The brother ("the
male in these parts") is accused by both sister Rozee and mother
Culla, now anti-male, pro-female.
The brother/son is tried and judged. The father finally returns, carrying
black noose; and the son is hung(hanged).
Others characters: the androgynous NEWSYS, reporting morning, noon,
and night how to be perpetually afraid; Ma'iM with little horns, the
Fool archetype in the tarot lives above the rest of the action; Frangrant
Nymphs covered head and torso wearing rubber gloves and sponges; the
Z, O, T are rudimentary males with little wolf tales; the B-L-D's are
female in essence -- witch and siren and bagladies and prostitutes;
Amne-blume is catholic girl who believes Christ and sex are synonymous;
Blum is german Jew who understands where there is Law there is not enough
Love. Plus 13 original songs.
HERESY is an erect reminder not to nestle into the illusory nature of
things. That doing your work, i.e. Self-realization, and helping others
is 90% of the game. The underlying politics of HERESY is to show how
by exploring your own individuation, you aid in the dethronement of
his Eminence, the Gluttonous Lord of Cultural Cancer.
Play version 8 1/2" x 11” with songs sans music. $20.
